Warning Sirens in Keokuk County

Press Release: Keokuk County, 05/24/2024, 5:54 AM

On Friday, May 24, 2024, at 5:54 am the National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning in Keokuk County following a severe squall line capable of producing tornadoes and extensive straight-line winds moving northeast into the county from Poweshiek County.

The Tornado Warning came to the Keokuk County Communications Center at 5:54 am. They
began setting off sirens in the Keokuk County communities immediately after. Unfortunately, some sirens did not function as expected during the storm. “We are looking into every possible reason they did not go off and are working together with the cities to ensure they are fixed as soon as possible to prevent this from occurring again” states Jorie Altenhofen, Keokuk County Emergency Management Coordinator.

“The safety of our residents in Keokuk County is our top priority. We understand malfunctions do
happen, but now we are aware of them and can work towards fixing them for the next time we need them” adds Casey Hinnah, Sheriff of Keokuk County.
