Daryl Baughman
KEOTA – Daryl Baughman, 103, died Saturday, June 22, 2024, at the Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa.
Daryl was born December 18,1920, in southeast Keota, the son of Curvin and Margaret (Seitsinger) Baughman. He married Irene Velma Gilliland in 1959 and they resided on the same farm for 57 years.
Daryl graduated from Kinross High School. He farmed with his family in the South English area. He then served in the 102nd Infantry of the United States Army during WWII. He returned to farm and continued to farm east of Keota. Daryl farmed and raised cattle for the remainder of his working years and Irene joined him after their marriage where they farmed for 57 years. Farming was Daryl’s passion, which he learned from his parents. He loved raising cattle and sharing about his days of raising locker beef and 4H cattle. In later years as he had to stop farming, he took over the gardening mowing from Irene and also learned to love that. Anyone who knew Daryl knew he was a proud veteran. He was the president of the Keota VFW for over 30 years where he worked side-by-side with Irene planning several stag nights. He loved sharing his stories and experiences of his time serving his country. He loved to share the history of his life. He enjoyed his weekly and sometimes daily visits for coffee at the Farmer’s Cooperative. One of his favorite times spent there was his annual Christmas celebration and playing liar’s poker with his dollar bills. Still to this day, he had a collection of “winning” dollar bills! Daryl enjoyed helping his neighbors and always rooted for the underdog. He helped many family members and friends over the years.
Daryl is survived by his nephews Don (Cheryl) Harriman of Jamestown, NY and Delaine “DK” Harriman of Bemus Point, NY, David Manthei of Cedar Rapids and nieces, Debra Kelly and Denise Montano both of Phoenix, AZ. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, parents, sisters, Marjorie, Lieta, and Margaret “Peg” and his brothers, Robert, Kenneth, Cloyce, and Cleo, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2024, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota. Burial will be at the Brethren Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Keota VFW and Auxiliary.
